From I Can’t to I Will: Breaking the Fear Cycle
Dr. Lyman Montgomery breaks down the hidden pattern behind self-doubt through the I CAN’T Cycle: inaction, costs, authority, need, and trust. He then shares the I WILL framework—intention, worth, integrity, learning, and leverage—to help listeners turn hesitation into movement.

Chapter 1
Decoding the I CAN'T Cycle
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
Hey everyone, welcome to the show! I am Dr. Lyman Montgomery, and I want to start today with a question that might sting just a little bit. Have you ever said, [softly] "I can't," but deep down, in that quiet place of your soul, you knew it wasn't actually about your ability?
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
Maybe you told yourself you didn't have the time, or the money, or the right credentials. But if we peel back the layers, [reflective] what if "I can't" is actually a pattern? A protection mechanism? What if it's just fear wearing the very respectable clothes of wisdom?
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
See, in my thirty years of leadership coaching and ministry, I've watched brilliant, faith-driven builders sit on their gifts because they're stuck in what I call the I CAN'T Cycle. And today, we are going to decode exactly what that cycle is. It's an acronym: Inaction, Costs, Authority, Need, and Trust. Let's start with that first letter--I for Inaction.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
[thoughtfully] Inaction is highly sophisticated. It almost never looks like laziness. Instead, it masquerades as preparation. You say, "I'm not stuck, I'm just researching. I'm taking one more course. I'm waiting for the perfect time." But let me ask you: are you preparing, or are you avoiding? If there is no movement, no decision, you are just hiding behind activity.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
And then we look at the C--Costs. Every single level of growth has a cost. There's a cost to being seen, a cost to changing your habits, a cost to starting that business or writing that book. But here is the mistake we make: we only count the cost of moving forward. We completely ignore the cost of staying exactly where we are.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
[measured] Think about it. Delay costs you time. Fear costs you confidence. Silence costs you impact. There is no cost-free option in life. You are either paying the price of fear, or you are investing in your future. Either way, [chuckles] there's a bill. The only question is which invoice you want to pay.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
That brings us to A--Authority. So many gifted leaders are waiting for someone else to hand them permission. They're waiting for a title, a credential, or some external validation to say, "Now you are ready." But you've already lived through the struggle. You've survived the fire and gained the wisdom. That is your authority. Where have you been confusing humility with hiding?
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
Then we have N for Need. When you don't clearly identify what you actually need--whether it's structure, a clearer message, or help--your next step stays blurry. You cannot solve a vague problem with a strong plan. You have to name the specific need, both for yourself and for the people you are called to serve.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
And finally, the T in I CAN'T is Trust. This is the big one. If you've started and stopped in the past, or if you've been hurt by others, your self-trust might be fractured. [softly] And when trust is broken, taking action feels incredibly risky. But you don't rebuild trust with a massive, dramatic leap. You rebuild it through tiny, kept promises to yourself. If you say you're going to write for ten minutes tomorrow, do it. Keep the promise. Build the trust.
Chapter 2
Activating the I WILL Framework
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
So how do we break out of that heavy, paralyzing cycle? We activate the counter-framework: I WILL. This is our path to movement, standing for Intention, Worth, Integrity, Learning, and Leverage. Let's break this down, starting with I--Intention.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
Intention is the moment you stop drifting and start deciding. It's when you draw a line in the sand and declare, "I will clarify my message. I will take the next step." Intention channels your scattered energy. Without it, you are just busy. With it, you become focused.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
Now let's talk about W--Worth. [reflective] This is where so many of us falter. We minimize what we know because it comes naturally to us. We look at our messy background and assume we have nothing of value to offer. But your worth isn't measured by how perfect your journey has been. Your worth is connected to the exact problems you can solve for someone else. Stop apologizing for your assignment and start recognizing the value of your survival.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
That leads directly to the second I--Integrity. And when I say integrity, I'm talking about alignment. Does your daily schedule actually match your declared assignment? [pauses] You cannot keep saying you want to scale your business or write your book while your actual calendar is completely blank. Integrity is where your desire finally turns into discipline.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
Then we have L for Learning. You don't need to have all the answers to start. You just have to be teachable. Instead of saying, "I can't because I don't know how," shift your language to, "I will learn what I need to know for the very next step." That single shift turns a scary limitation into a classroom.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
And lastly, the L in I WILL is Leverage. Stop waiting for some new resource, some magic check, or some perfect scenario. What is already in your hands? Your story, your past lessons, your existing skills--that is your leverage. Use what you have right now to create momentum.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
[warmly] This is how we shift. We move from Inaction to Intention, from counting Costs to recognizing Worth, from waiting for Authority to walking in Integrity, from unmet Need to active Learning, and from broken Trust to powerful Leverage.
Dr. Lyman Montgomery
So here is my challenge for you today: write down just one "I can't" statement that has been holding you back this week. Identify which part of the cycle it's tied to, and then rewrite it. Turn it into an "I will" statement.
